Rules and Requirements

Updated: 7 November 2025

1) The structure, town, or collection of buildings which is requesting a waypoint must be aesthetically pleasing.

2) There is no fixed number of residents required. The population requirement for waypoint eligibility depends on how grand your town is. Exceptionally impressive towns or structures may not need any residents at all, while more functional, utility-focused towns will require active residents living there. The exact number of residents needed is flexible and scales with current server activity.

3) The waypoint statue must be built as shown below:

You may customize the 12 blocks surrounding the base, the color of the glass above, and the light source in the corners, as long as the light source is a full block. (In the example shown, these are wool blocks, glass, and glowstone.) The tower must match this design exactly. It must also include a beacon, which cannot be removed. If the beacon is taken down after the waypoint is created, the waypoint sign will be removed.

In rare cases, exceptions may be granted to use alternative blocks instead of stone slabs, but your town must have a very strong and consistent theme for this to be allowed. Even with an approved alternative block type, the original statue shape must remain unchanged. An example of a town with an alternate waypoint is shown below.

If your town does not have a waypoint statue which meets the requirements above, that alone is grounds for someone to simply deny the town a waypoint until the statue is corrected.

4) Distance yourself from spawn. No waypoint within 500 blocks of spawn will be accepted. At this distance, a waypoint is not needed.

5) Waypoints must be 500 blocks from each other measured statue to statue. They can be closer if both parties consent but cannot be closer than 150 blocks from each other measured statue to statue. (Yes, this means that one person could have built both of the waypoints) It is preferred that they have some form of defining difference between the two of them however.

6) Be respectful when asking for a waypoint. The following individuals can assign waypoints:

If your town is denied, it doesn't mean the person dislikes you. You're welcome to ask a moderator for feedback. They can give you a second opinion and may even help influence those who approve waypoints. Be sure to consider a moderator's advice seriously, as following their suggestions will likely improve your chances of earning a waypoint.

Ideally, a well designed town should strive to balance aesthetics and functionality. Even with a waypoint, an aesthically pleasing but empty town can still fail from a community perspective. Similarly, a functional town with active residents, but lacks aesthetics. In short, the best towns are both visually appealing and filled with an active community.
